How to Protect a PDF with a Password
- Upload a PDF file you want to secure
- Enter a strong password (at least 8 characters)
- Choose permissions: full access, no printing, no copying, or fully restricted
- Select encryption strength: 128-bit or 256-bit AES
- Click "Process" and download your protected PDF
Why Password protection prevents unauthorized access to sensitive documents like contracts, financial reports, and personal information. Only people with the password can open the file.
Important: We cannot recover your password if you forget it. Store it somewhere safe.
What do the permission options mean?
| Permission | Effect |
|---|---|
| Full access | Anyone with the password can do everything โ equivalent to no restrictions |
| No printing | Document can be read and copied, but printing is blocked |
| No copying | Text selection and copy-paste are disabled |
| Fully restricted | Printing, copying and modification are all blocked |
128-bit or 256-bit AES? 256-bit AES is the modern standard and is supported by all current PDF readers. Use it unless you need compatibility with very old software.
